Abstract

This paper focuses on obtaining an outer bound on the performance of a discrete memoryless multi-source, single destination network. This outer bound is found to be achievable using separate source and channel coding for certain example channels. However, separate coding is not always optimal for such networks. In particular, the paper focuses on the multiple access channel with two correlated sources. This paper uses the outer bound on the capacity region and shows that the outer bound can be achieved by separate source and channel coding for the binary erasure and binary symmetric multiple access channels and the physically degraded relay channel.
